DOG DAYS: Why are those hot summer days called "dog days"?

~The ancient Romans believed that six or eight hottest days of the summer were caused by the Dog Star, Sirius' rising with the sun and adding its heat to the day. They called these days cuniculares dies--"dog days"~

Etymology for Breakfast!

FREELANCE: "Why is an independant writer, photographer, or the like called a 'free lance'?"
A medieval mercenary soldier who was free of any continuing loyalties was known as a "free companion". Sir Walter Scott in his novel, "Ivanhoe", coined the more descriptive term for such a soldier--"FREE LANCE"
